Custom No Ghost Logo T-Shirts

This is definitely not an original idea, just an updated one. Before Ghostbusters International® was on-line, I knew of a place in the Northern part of Jersey that sold "no ghost" logo iron ons and "blank" t-shirts. In '99 I bought a shirt and the iron on logo, having the store professionally print it. I was good to go.

Before 2002 I accidently washed my Ghostbusters t-shirt the wrong way and the iron on cracked. I haven't had a no ghost logo tee, THE logo since, until now.

Since I first wrote this tutorial, Sony has licensed companies like Thunder Creek to make Ghostbusters apparel. Various t-shirts from the "no ghost" logo to other icons of Ghostbusters can be bought from on-line stores like 80stees.com. Perhaps in finer retail stores near you too. That's great as we love to see the franchise out there. Sometimes you're in an arts and crafts kind of mood and making your own t-shirt can add a personal touch.

How can you make your own Ghostbusters t-shirt? Read on.

First, go to wherever you buy blank t-shirts, getting the color t-shirt you like. White, black, gray, and lighter colors probably work best. I buy my blank t-shits at craft stores. They're usually no more then $5 USD a piece. If you don't need a 2x like myself (its muscle!) sometimes they're even on sale.

While you're at said craft store of your choice see if they have iron on transfer paper. It'll probably be located by the rainbow of t-shirts. From my experience you'll find the right transfer paper from an office supply store. I bought my transfer paper from Staples. If you don't live near arts and craft stores and/or office supplies stores, you can order both the t-shirt(s) and iron on transfer paper on-line.

Tip: Not all iron on transfer papers are compatible for all printers. Some types of this paper is better for lighter shirts than dark. And visa-versa.

3. Once home and on your computer make sure you have the clearest Ghostbusters image. Size it if necessary in your graphics program.

4. After you have the image "right" for you, print it out.

Tips: Be sure you have your printer settings right so it doesn't crop the image. Also refer to the directions that came with the iron on paper.

5. Cut out the image carefully, especially the "no ghost" logo. Otherwise the background (if black or another color) will transfer to the t-shirt. Trust me, I've made this mistake before.

6. Follow the directions that came with your iron on paper to get your iron on image transfered onto the t-shirt.

General Tips for step #6

Don't use an ironing board. Use a hard surface that probably won't be as tall as an ironing board. Put a folded pillowcase underneath the t-shirt. Even professional silk screeners do something similar.

If the pillow case or your t-shirt is wrinkled, iron or smooth with your hands the area where you're going to put your image.

Your iron may differ then mine or anothers. Despite the heat time the instructions specify, you probably won't need to iron the entire time. Otherwise it may get spotty, ruining the image.

Be sure the image is cool or at least not hot before peeling away the paper.

7. Clean up, wear and enjoy.

Tip: To keep your image from cracking and being ruined, wash your shirt inside out and in cold water. Personally I'd line dry it.

Following my tutorial, (minus my tips, see I made the mistakes for you!) I made two "no ghost" logo t-shirts. I wanted one which was more remensicent of the t-shirts seen at the end of Ghostbusters. I bought a light blue t-shirt, like a shade darker then THE color from 1984. This was my test t-shirt.

As you might notice, the image is spotty. This is from the tip I gave you in step #6. The image is off centered too. It kinda gives it an aged look. Still, mistakes were made.

I made a second t-shirt, in black. Its much better by compairson. Their are a few spots, not too noticable in general.

Perhaps I'll perfect this eventually.

Where are they now?

If you're wondering, I eventually destroyed both t-shirts by not following their instructions and my own tips. I did get my use out of them and usually received good/positive feedback.

Since then I've bought an official Ghostusters t-shirt and would buy another. Doing the projects at the time was a lot of fun.
