San Diego Comic Convention Report 2006
By Bryan Fear

We got a little coverage on IGN but the pic is actually from last year but it all still applies so it might as well have been this year. ( Team = Eric Eseke, Al Smith, Bryan Fear and Jeff Kirby. ) Eddie Davis is not pictured but is usually our backup guy when Al can't make it. This year's team added on a guy named James Rolfson who needed something to wear while his girlfriend hung out with us.

She usually goes as Slave Leia, but this year added in a costume of Nova ( Starcraft: Ghost, the game which may never end up being released ) and a night elf. ( Blizzard software loves her for plugging their stuff at a con. They don't have enough hot chicks plugging their games.
We only did Ghostbusters on Thursday and a little bit on Friday. ( When G4 TV asked for Ghostbusters to be in the background with 40+ other costumed heroes, we were glad to accomodate. ) Check G4 TV for video clips.
For the rest of early Friday and early Saturday Eric Eseke rolled out the Robocop armor we had been working on all year. This thing sucks. It's so damned hot. I'd rather wear Vader or something all-leather like the Wesley Snipes Blade gear than this stupid thing. Eric almost passed out from heat-exhaustion in the 100-110 weather at the Con.
For the rest of Saturday Eric and I joined the Modal Nodes. ( The Star Wars Cantina Band. - no pics yet ) We went on stage for Masquerade as contestant #48 out of 48 possible. Instead of playing the cantina theme, our band leader wore his costume with a sequined jacket and sung the theme to star wars like Bill Murray would on the old SNL sketches where he was a lounge singer. It was a riot. Just ahead of us as act #42 was my friend Jenn with her Nova ( Starcraft: Ghost ) costume. I built that thing for her earlier in the year and ended up competing against her. She won passes to go to E3 but gave one of them to me so it's all good. As for the cantina band, everyone laughed their assess off so I guess we did okay.

On Sunday Eric and I wanted a light day so we went as something else. Little did we know, this "something else" would land us on the freakin COVER of the city's newspaper the next morning. ....at the bottom left corner, but hey, the cover is the cover!

Other highlights = We met Jim "Gozer" Lee again. Actually, I'm not sure why I just put that in quotes. His parents actually named him Gozer. Funny because it's also mis-spelled. Good job mom and dad!
Other, other highlights = Rosario Dawson ran by us with a security entourage, stopped to break out of formatin and say "Oh my God, I love you guys! The Ghostbusters were so totally my heroes when I was growing up! I love that you guys are here!! You're awesome!" and off she went.

Other, other, other highlights = We're standing there for about 7-8 photographers in a line when I notice one of them isn't holding a camera. ....He's just standing there smiling with this Tom Cruise-esque smile. That's when it hits me, it's freakin' David Arquette!!! I loved "Ready to Rumble" so it's really cool to meet him. I said "Hey, shouldn't we be getting a picture of YOU?!" He laughs and says "Sometimes you sort of like being normal, ya know?" We coax him into a picture with us and then he gives us all t-shirts of his new movie, The Tripper. He signed them all. What a cool guy.
Here's a link to some pics from the event, but after I get done writing ( and get some sleep ) I'll spend tomorrow trying to see what other pics are out there of us at Con. Frankly, I had my hand in 7 different costumes or groups roaming Comic-Con this year so I was beyond busy and am looking for pics of them all. Pity me, for I do not have that kind of time. <:-(
